Brakes Failing — Stay Safe, Get Stopped
If the pedal goes soft or the rig isn't slowing right, act fast. Here's what to do.
This is serious. Don't panic. Downshift, use engine braking, pump the brake if it's soft (might build pressure), and get off the road. Then get the system inspected before you drive again.
- Stay calm. Ease off the gas. Turn on hazards. Don't slam the brake — pump it if the pedal is soft; you may get some pressure back.
- Downshift (manual or tow/haul) to use engine braking. Let the rig slow gradually. Steer toward the shoulder or an exit.
- Use the parking brake only as a last resort and gently — it can lock wheels and cause a skid. Priority is controlled stop off the road.
- Once stopped: don't drive again until a pro has checked the brakes. Low fluid, worn pads, or a leak can cause failure.
- Call for a mobile brake tech or tow to a shop. Brakes are not a DIY-on-the-road fix.
Next: Call a mobile tech or shop near you. Get the brakes inspected and repaired before you roll again.
