Engine Won't Start — Quick Checks
Often it's battery or fuel. Run through these before you call for a tow.
No crank vs crank no start. If the engine doesn't turn over at all, think battery or starter. If it cranks but won't fire, think fuel, spark, or air.
- Lights and dash: do they come on? If nothing works, battery is dead or connection is bad. Jump or replace; then get the charging system checked.
- Click but no crank: weak battery or bad connection. Clean terminals, try a jump. If it still just clicks, starter or solenoid may be done.
- Cranks but won't start: check fuel. Diesel? Wait for glow plugs. Gas? Listen for fuel pump when you turn the key. Out of fuel or bad pump = no start.
- If it sat a long time: old fuel, bad battery, or critters in the air intake. Check air filter and battery first.
- Still no start? Don't burn down the starter. Call a mobile tech — they can diagnose and often fix on the spot.
