Overheating — Cool Down Safe

Temp gauge in the red? Get off the road and let it cool. Never open the radiator or cap while it's hot.

Do not open the radiator or coolant cap while the engine is hot. Pressurized steam can cause severe burns. Wait until the engine is cool to the touch (often 30+ minutes) before opening the cap or adding coolant.
  1. Turn off the A/C. Turn on the heater (it dumps engine heat into the cab). Ease off the gas and get to the shoulder or an exit. Don't push it.
  2. Once stopped, leave the engine running at idle for a minute so the coolant keeps circulating. Then shut it off and pop the hood for airflow.
  3. Wait. Don't open the cap. Check for obvious leaks (hoses, radiator, overflow) from the outside. If you see a major leak, you'll need a tow or mobile tech and coolant.
  4. When the engine is cool, check coolant level in the overflow tank. If it's low, add the right mix (50/50 or what your manual says). Fix the cause of the loss before driving far.
  5. If it overheats again quickly or you're not sure why it happened, get to a shop or call a mobile tech. Overheating can kill an engine fast.

Next: Call a mobile tech near you. Cooling system issues often need a pro — leaks, thermostat, water pump, or fan.
